The catalytic converter in the Subaru Ascent is a critical component of the exhaust system, designed to reduce harmful emissions such as hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxides (NOx), thereby helping to protect the environment.

To maintain proper function and avoid costly damage to the catalytic converter in your Subaru Ascent, follow these important guidelines.

  • Always use unleaded fuel. Even small amounts of leaded fuel can permanently damage the catalytic converter.
  • Never attempt to start the engine by pushing or towing the vehicle.
  • Avoid excessive engine revving, especially when the engine is cold.
  • Do not turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position while the vehicle is moving.
  • Ensure the engine is operating smoothly. If you notice irregular performance such as misfiring or backfiring, have your Subaru Ascent inspected by a qualified SUBARU dealer.
  • Avoid applying undercoating or rustproofing materials to the catalytic converter or its heat shield.

  • Be mindful of fire hazards. Do not park or drive your Subaru Ascent near flammable materials such as dry grass, paper, or leaves, as the catalytic converter reaches extremely high temperatures.
  • Keep people and combustible materials away from the exhaust outlet while the engine is running.

    The exhaust gases emitted by the Subaru Ascent are extremely hot and can cause burns or fires.
