CAUTION
When operating the Subaru Ascent starter motor, never crank the engine continuously for more than 10 seconds.
If the engine of the Subaru Ascent does not start within 5 to 10 seconds, stop cranking and wait at least 10 seconds before attempting again. This pause helps prevent overheating and potential damage to the starter system.
NOTE
After disconnecting and reconnecting the battery in the Subaru Ascent (for maintenance or repair), starting the engine may initially be more difficult. This occurs due to the electronic throttle system performing a self-check. To resolve this, turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position and wait approximately 10 seconds before starting the engine.

General precautions when starting engine
WARNING
- Never attempt to start the Subaru Ascent engine from outside the vehicle (except when using an authorized remote start system). This may result in unintended vehicle movement and serious injury.
- Avoid running the Subaru Ascent engine in enclosed or poorly ventilated
areas such as garages or indoor spaces.
Exhaust gases may accumulate and enter the cabin, leading to carbon monoxide poisoning, which is extremely dangerous.
- Do not start the Subaru Ascent engine near dry grass, leaves, or other flammable materials. The exhaust system becomes very hot and may ignite surrounding objects.
CAUTION
- If the Subaru Ascent engine stops while driving, the catalytic converter may overheat, potentially causing damage or fire risk.
- Always be seated properly in the driver’s seat when starting the Subaru Ascent engine (unless using a remote start system).
NOTE
- Avoid sudden acceleration or high engine revving immediately after starting the Subaru Ascent, as the engine requires time to stabilize.
- After startup, the Subaru Ascent engine may run at a higher idle speed temporarily to reach optimal operating temperature.
- In rare cases, starting may be difficult depending on fuel quality or driving patterns (such as repeated short trips where the engine does not fully warm up). Switching to a different fuel brand may help improve performance.
- Occasionally, slight knocking may be heard during rapid acceleration. This is a normal characteristic and not a malfunction in the Subaru Ascent.
- The Subaru Ascent engine will start more easily if high electrical loads such as headlights, climate control, and rear defogger are turned off beforehand.
- Do not attempt to shift the select lever while the starter motor is engaged.
1. Engage the parking brake firmly to secure the Subaru Ascent.
2. Switch off all unnecessary electrical systems and accessories to reduce load on the battery.
3. Move the select lever to the "P" (Park) or "N" (Neutral) position. The "P" position is recommended for starting the Subaru Ascent.
The starter system is designed to operate only when the select lever is in either the "P" or "N" position.
4. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position and verify that all warning and indicator lights illuminate briefly, confirming proper system operation in the Subaru Ascent.
5. Turn the ignition switch to the "START" position without pressing the accelerator pedal. Once the Subaru Ascent engine starts, release the key immediately to prevent unnecessary strain on the starter.

If the Subaru Ascent engine does not start on the first attempt, follow the steps below carefully to improve the chances of a successful start while protecting the engine and starter system.
- Turn the ignition switch of the Subaru Ascent to the "LOCK"/"OFF" position and wait at least 10 seconds. After confirming that the parking brake is firmly engaged, turn the ignition switch to the "START" position while gently pressing the accelerator pedal (approximately one-quarter of its full travel). Release the accelerator immediately once the engine starts.
- If the Subaru Ascent engine still does not start, return the ignition switch to the "LOCK"/"OFF" position and wait again for at least 10 seconds. Then press the accelerator pedal fully and turn the ignition switch to the "START" position. As soon as the engine starts, promptly release the accelerator pedal.
- If starting remains unsuccessful, turn the ignition switch back to the "LOCK"/"OFF" position and wait 10 seconds or longer. Then attempt to start the Subaru Ascent engine again by turning the ignition switch to "START" without pressing the accelerator pedal.
- If the Subaru Ascent engine still does not start after these procedures, contact your nearest SUBARU dealer for professional assistance and diagnosis.
6. After the Subaru Ascent engine starts, verify that all warning and indicator lights have turned off. The fuel injection system will automatically adjust the idle speed as the engine warms up to normal operating temperature.
While the Subaru Ascent engine is warming up, ensure that the select lever remains in the "P" or "N" position and that the parking brake is applied securely to prevent unintended movement.
CAUTION
If it becomes necessary to restart the Subaru Ascent engine while the vehicle is still moving, shift the select lever into the "N" (Neutral) position. Never attempt to shift into the "P" (Park) position while the vehicle is in motion, as this may cause severe transmission damage.
Stopping the engine
The ignition switch of the Subaru Ascent should only be turned to the "OFF" position when the vehicle is completely stopped and the engine is idling normally.
WARNING
Never turn off the Subaru Ascent engine while the vehicle is moving. Doing so will result in the loss of power assistance for steering and braking systems, making vehicle control significantly more difficult. Additionally, the ignition switch may move to the "LOCK"/"OFF" position, potentially locking the steering wheel and increasing the risk of an accident.
Steering lock
After the Subaru Ascent engine is switched off and the key is removed from the ignition, the steering wheel will automatically lock as part of the built-in anti-theft steering lock system.
When restarting the Subaru Ascent, the steering lock mechanism will release automatically once the key is turned and the ignition system is activated.
When the steering lock cannot be released
If the steering wheel of the Subaru Ascent remains locked and cannot be turned, follow these steps carefully.
1. Confirm that the parking brake is fully applied.
2. Turn off all unnecessary electrical devices and accessories to reduce load on the system.
3. Ensure that the select lever is firmly positioned in "P" (Park).
4. Press and hold the brake pedal steadily.
5. While gently turning the steering wheel left and right, turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position to release the steering lock.
