CAUTION
When an adult is seated in the front passenger seat of the Subaru Ascent, it is essential to follow these precautions carefully.
Failure to comply with these instructions may reduce the pressure applied to the seat sensors, causing the system to incorrectly deactivate the front passenger SRS frontal airbag even though the seat is occupied.
This improper detection may increase the risk of injury in the event of a collision.
- Do not allow rear passengers to push upward on the front passenger seat cushion using their feet.
- Do not place any objects underneath the front passenger seat or force items into the space beneath it, as this may lift the seat cushion and affect sensor readings.
- Avoid wedging items between the front passenger seat and surrounding interior structures such as the door, pillar, or center console, as this can alter seat positioning and sensor accuracy.

This condition in the Subaru Ascent may occur if the front passenger is not seated correctly or if the occupant detection system is affected by external factors.
To restore proper operation, follow these steps:
1. Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK"/"OFF" position.
2. Ask the front passenger to sit upright in the center of the seat, adjust the seatback to a vertical position, fasten the seatbelt properly, extend legs forward, and move the seat to the rearmost position.
3. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
If the issue persists in the Subaru Ascent, perform the following additional checks:
1. Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK"/"OFF" position again.
2. Ensure the passenger is not using additional items such as blankets, cushions, seat covers, heaters, or massage devices.
3. Remove excessive clothing layers if necessary, as they may affect sensor readings, or consider seating the passenger in the rear seat.
4. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position and allow approximately 6 seconds for the system self-check.
During the self-check, both indicators will turn off briefly. Afterward, the ON indicator should illuminate while the OFF indicator remains off.
If the OFF indicator still remains illuminated, relocate the passenger to the rear seat and immediately contact a SUBARU dealer for inspection of the Subaru Ascent safety system.

Additionally, the driver's SRS knee airbag deploys simultaneously with the frontal airbag to enhance lower body protection.

After deployment
After deployment, Subaru Ascent airbags deflate almost instantly—faster than the blink of an eye—to ensure that the driver's visibility remains unobstructed and vehicle control is maintained.
Regardless of whether only the driver airbag deploys or both front airbags deploy, the seatbelt pretensioners activate simultaneously to provide additional restraint.
During deployment, a loud noise and the release of a small amount of smoke may occur. This is a normal part of the Subaru Ascent airbag system operation and does not indicate a fire.
CAUTION
Do not touch any SRS airbag components near the steering wheel, dashboard, or deployment zones immediately after activation. These components may become extremely hot and can cause burns.
