Subaru Ascent 2018-2026 Owner's Manual: Driving tips for AWD models

WARNING

  • Always adjust your driving speed according to road, weather, and traffic conditions when operating the Subaru Ascent. Excessive speed, especially on sharp turns or during sudden braking, can lead to loss of control and serious accidents.
  • Do not become overconfident simply because your Subaru Ascent is equipped with an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system. While AWD improves traction, it does not eliminate the risk of accidents.
  • When replacing tires on your Subaru Ascent, all four tires must be identical in the following aspects.
    1. Size
    2. Speed rating
    3. Load capacity index
    4. Circumference
    5. Construction type
    6. Manufacturer
    7. Brand and tread pattern
    8. Wear condition

    For items (a) through (c), always follow the specifications listed on the tire inflation pressure label located on the driver’s door pillar.

    If these requirements are not met, the Subaru Ascent drivetrain may suffer serious damage, and the following aspects may be negatively affected.

    • Ride comfort
    • Handling stability
    • Braking performance
    • Accuracy of speedometer and odometer
    • Clearance between tires and body components

    Failure to maintain uniform tire specifications can also compromise safety and increase the risk of losing control of your Subaru Ascent.

CAUTION

If you must use a temporary spare tire on your Subaru Ascent, always use the original spare provided with the vehicle. Using a spare tire of a different size or type can cause severe damage to the AWD drivetrain system.

Because of these advanced characteristics, the Subaru Ascent may behave differently compared to conventional two-wheel drive vehicles. Understanding these differences is essential for safe and efficient driving.

  • The Subaru Ascent AWD system allows better climbing capability on steep, slippery roads compared to two-wheel drive vehicles. However, during sharp turns or sudden braking, traction advantages are reduced. Always decrease speed and maintain a safe following distance.
  • Check tire pressure regularly before driving. Proper tire inflation, as specified on the label inside the driver's door frame, is critical for maintaining AWD performance.
  • Frequent operation of the Subaru Ascent under demanding conditions such as mountainous terrain or dusty environments requires more frequent maintenance than standard intervals. Pay special attention to the following components.
    • Engine oil
    • Brake fluid
    • Rear differential oil
    • Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) fluid
    • Front differential oil
  • Special care must also be taken when towing your Subaru Ascent, as improper towing methods may damage the AWD system.
