Subaru Ascent 2018-2026 Owner's Manual: On-road and off-road driving

WARNING

  • Always adapt your driving speed in the Subaru Ascent to match current road, traffic, and weather conditions. Excessive speed during cornering, braking, or sudden maneuvers can significantly increase the risk of accidents.
  • Even though the Subaru Ascent is equipped with an advanced All-Wheel Drive system, never rely solely on this feature. Overconfidence can easily result in loss of control and serious incidents.
  • In the event of a rollover accident, occupants not wearing seatbelts are at far greater risk of fatal injury. Ensure that the driver and all passengers in the Subaru Ascent are properly restrained before driving.
  • Avoid abrupt steering inputs or sudden directional changes unless absolutely necessary.

    Such actions can destabilize the Subaru Ascent and may lead to loss of control or even a rollover.

  • Reduce speed significantly when driving in strong crosswinds.

    Due to its higher ride height and center of gravity, the Subaru Ascent is more susceptible to wind influence compared to standard passenger cars.

  • Never attempt to drive through flooded areas, deep puddles, or standing water.

    Water entering the engine intake, exhaust system, or electrical components can cause severe damage or engine stalling. Additionally, water can erode the ground beneath the tires, leading to loss of traction or rollover risk.

  • Operating the Subaru Ascent frequently on rough terrain, gravel roads, or off-road environments requires more frequent maintenance than outlined in the standard service schedule.

    Damage caused by improper off-road use or failure to follow recommended precautions is not covered under warranty for the Subaru Ascent.

  • After driving on uneven or gravel surfaces, inspect the underside of your Subaru Ascent for any signs of damage, deformation, or paint wear. If abnormalities are detected, have the vehicle inspected by a SUBARU dealer as soon as possible.

The Subaru Ascent is classified as a utility vehicle, offering increased ground clearance that allows it to handle a wide variety of driving conditions, including light off-road use. However, it is important to understand that it is not a dedicated off-road vehicle or an all-terrain vehicle.

Because of its higher center of gravity compared to standard passenger cars, the Subaru Ascent has a greater tendency to roll over if driven aggressively or improperly. While the elevated seating position improves visibility and awareness of road conditions, it also requires more cautious handling, especially during high-speed cornering.

When driving the Subaru Ascent off-road, always follow sensible safety practices to reduce risks and maintain control.

Before driving

  • Ensure that all occupants in the Subaru Ascent are properly wearing seatbelts.
  • Carry essential emergency equipment, such as a tow rope, shovel, wheel chocks, first aid kit, and communication device.
  • Secure all cargo inside the Subaru Ascent. Loose items can shift during sudden stops or uneven terrain and may cause injury.

    Avoid stacking cargo above seatback height and do not overload the roof, as this increases the risk of rollover.

  • Only use tires that meet the specifications outlined for the Subaru Ascent. Oversized tires can negatively affect handling and safety.

During driving

General precautions:

  • Operate the Subaru Ascent with caution at all times and avoid unnecessary risks, especially when driving in unfamiliar or hazardous terrain.
  • Reduce speed and remain vigilant. Off-road environments lack road markings, signage, and engineered surfaces.
  • Avoid traversing steep slopes sideways.

    Instead, approach inclines directly up or down. The Subaru Ascent is far more likely to tip sideways than to roll forward or backward.

  • Minimize sharp turns, particularly at higher speeds.
  • Keep your hands positioned on the outer rim of the steering wheel.

    A sudden impact can jerk the wheel violently, potentially causing injury if hands are placed inside the spokes.

  • Do not drive or park over flammable materials such as dry grass or leaves.

    The exhaust system of the Subaru Ascent becomes extremely hot and may ignite such materials.

Precautions when driving under especially dangerous situations:

  • If the Subaru Ascent becomes stuck in sand or mud, gently press the accelerator and alternate the select lever between "D" and "R" to rock the vehicle free. Avoid excessive engine revving and wheel spin.
  • On extremely slippery surfaces, improved traction can sometimes be achieved by starting in second gear rather than first. Refer to "Selection of manual mode" for details.

After driving

  • After driving through water, mud, or sand, test brake performance immediately by driving slowly and applying the brakes repeatedly.

    This helps dry the brake components and restore effectiveness.

  • Inspect the underside of the Subaru Ascent for debris such as grass, mud, stones, or sand. Remove any buildup to prevent mechanical damage or fire hazards.
  • Thoroughly wash the underbody after off-road use. Suspension components are especially prone to contamination and should be cleaned carefully.
