Subaru Ascent 2018-2026 Owner's Manual: Electronic parking brake indicator light

Parking brake indicator

In the Subaru Ascent, the electronic parking brake indicator light illuminates whenever the parking brake is applied while the ignition switch is in the "ON" position. This confirms that the vehicle is securely held in place. Once the parking brake is fully released, the indicator light should immediately turn off, signaling that the braking system has returned to its normal driving state and the Subaru Ascent is ready for safe movement.

Electronic parking brake system warning

WARNING

  • When you release the electronic parking brake in your Subaru Ascent while the engine is running, the indicator light should turn off without delay.

If the light remains illuminated even after releasing the brake, this may indicate a malfunction in the electronic parking brake system. In such a situation, safely stop the Subaru Ascent as soon as possible and have the system inspected by an authorized SUBARU dealer to prevent potential safety risks.

  • If there is any doubt regarding the proper operation of the braking system in your Subaru Ascent, do not continue driving. Arrange to have the vehicle transported to the nearest SUBARU dealer, where trained specialists can diagnose and resolve the issue.
  • If the electronic parking brake indicator light begins to flash, this may signal a fault within the electronic parking brake system of the Subaru Ascent. Immediately stop the vehicle in a safe location, secure it using wheel chocks or tire stops to prevent movement, and contact a SUBARU dealer for assistance.

NOTE

  • When the ignition switch of the Subaru Ascent is turned to the "LOCK"/"OFF" position while the electronic parking brake is applied, the indicator light will remain illuminated for approximately 30 seconds before automatically turning off.
  • If the electronic parking brake switch is activated to apply the brake while the ignition is in the "LOCK"/"OFF" position, the indicator light will illuminate, remain on for about 30 seconds, and then turn off.
  • In certain cases, even if the electronic parking brake indicator light flashes in your Subaru Ascent, it may not indicate a malfunction. For example:
    • If the indicator light turns off after the electronic parking brake is released, the system is operating normally.
  • The indicator light may briefly flash immediately after starting the engine. This is considered normal behavior if the light turns off after the parking brake is released in the Subaru Ascent.
  • The indicator light may also flash after repeated application and release of the electronic parking brake. This does not indicate a fault if the light turns off shortly afterward and the system resumes normal operation.

The electronic parking brake indicator light in the Subaru Ascent will flash continuously if the system detects a malfunction. If this occurs, you should promptly bring the vehicle to a safe stop and contact a SUBARU dealer to have the system inspected and repaired as necessary.

If the indicator light remains steadily illuminated and the parking brake cannot be released even after operating the switch, this indicates a system issue requiring immediate attention. Refer to the "Electronic parking brake" section for additional operational details specific to the Subaru Ascent.

Parking brake apply inhibit warning

In the Subaru Ascent, the indicator light will flash for approximately 10 seconds and an audible chirp will sound if the parking brake switch is operated under conditions where the brake cannot be applied. This function is designed to alert the driver that the requested action cannot be completed due to system or safety constraints.

Frequent operation warning

If the electronic parking brake switch is used excessively within a short period, the indicator light in the Subaru Ascent will flash for about 10 seconds and a warning sound will be emitted. In this case, the system may temporarily restrict operation of the parking brake to protect internal components from overheating or wear.

NOTE

Allow the electronic parking brake system in your Subaru Ascent sufficient time to reset and wait until the indicator light turns off before attempting further operation.

Proper use of the electronic parking brake system in the Subaru Ascent, including avoiding excessive or unnecessary activation, helps maintain long-term reliability and ensures consistent performance under various driving conditions.
