CAUTION
- If the oil level gauge in your Subaru Ascent does not slide out easily, gently rotate it left and right before pulling. Applying excessive force may lead to sudden release and possible injury.
- Always use engine oil that meets the recommended grade and viscosity specified for the Subaru Ascent to ensure optimal engine protection and performance.
- Take care to avoid spilling engine oil during refilling. If oil comes into contact with hot exhaust components, it may produce smoke, unpleasant odors, or even pose a fire hazard. If any oil is spilled, clean it off immediately.
Engine oil consumption
During normal operation, your Subaru Ascent engine will consume a certain amount of oil. This is a natural process, and the rate of consumption may vary depending on several influencing factors such as driving habits, environmental conditions, and engine load.
Oil consumption may increase under the following conditions, and in such cases, periodic topping up between scheduled maintenance intervals may be necessary.
- During the engine break-in period when the Subaru Ascent is new
- When using engine oil of lower quality than recommended
- When incorrect oil viscosity is selected
- During frequent engine braking
- When operating the engine at high RPM for extended periods
- When driving under heavy load conditions for prolonged durations
- When towing a trailer with your Subaru Ascent
- When the engine is left idling for long periods
- In stop-and-go traffic or heavy urban driving conditions
- When exposed to extreme temperature conditions
- When frequent acceleration and deceleration occur
Under these or similar driving conditions, it is advisable to check the engine oil level of your Subaru Ascent at least every second refueling stop and consider more frequent oil changes. Oil consumption may vary significantly between drivers even when using the same vehicle. If consumption appears unusually high, consult your authorized SUBARU dealer for a professional evaluation under controlled conditions.
Locations of the oil level gauge, oil filler cap and oil filter

- Oil level gauge
- Oil filler cap
- Oil filter
Checking the oil level
1. Park your Subaru Ascent on a flat and level surface, then turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK"/"OFF" position. If the engine has just been turned off, wait at least 5 minutes to allow the oil to drain back into the oil pan for an accurate reading.
CAUTION
If the oil level gauge resists removal, gently twist it back and forth before pulling it out.
Forcing the gauge may result in sudden release and potential injury.
2. Remove the oil level gauge, wipe it clean with a cloth, and reinsert it fully into its tube.

3. Ensure that the dipstick is properly seated all the way down to obtain an accurate oil level reading.

- Full level
- Low level
- Approximately 1.1 US qt (1.0 liters, 0.9 Imp qt) from low level to full level
4. Remove the dipstick again and check the oil level. The oil should be between the "LOW" and "FULL" marks. If it is near or below the low mark, add the appropriate oil for your Subaru Ascent gradually, rechecking the level to avoid overfilling.
Maintaining the correct engine oil level is essential for the long-term durability, efficiency, and performance of your Subaru Ascent, ensuring smooth operation under all driving conditions.
5. Inspect the oil level on both sides of the dipstick in your Subaru Ascent. Always determine the correct oil level based on the lower reading of the two sides. If the level is below the "LOW" mark, add engine oil gradually until it reaches the "FULL" level.
CAUTION
- When removing the oil filler cap in your Subaru Ascent, avoid contact with the engine oil filter, as it may be hot and could cause burns or injury.
- Always use engine oil that meets the recommended specifications for grade and viscosity to ensure proper lubrication and engine protection.
- Be careful not to spill engine oil while refilling. If oil comes into contact with the exhaust system, it may produce smoke, unpleasant odors, or even pose a fire risk. Clean any spills immediately.
To add engine oil to your Subaru Ascent, remove the oil filler cap and slowly pour the oil through the filler opening. Add the oil in small amounts, checking the level with the dipstick after each addition to ensure accuracy and prevent overfilling.
NOTE
- To avoid overfilling, never add oil beyond the upper level mark when the engine of your Subaru Ascent is cold.
- After topping up or changing the oil, the low oil level warning light may remain illuminated temporarily. Park the vehicle on a level surface and wait for at least one minute to allow the oil to settle, after which the indicator should turn off.
Changing the oil and oil filter
Engine oil and oil filter replacement for your Subaru Ascent should be carried out according to the intervals specified in the "Warranty and Maintenance Booklet". Adhering to this schedule is essential for maintaining engine efficiency and longevity.
However, under more demanding driving conditions—such as frequent short trips, operation on dusty roads, or driving in extremely cold climates—more frequent oil and filter changes are strongly recommended to protect the engine of your Subaru Ascent.
NOTE
- It is recommended that oil and filter changes be performed by qualified technicians. Authorized SUBARU dealers are equipped with the proper tools, genuine parts, and recommended oils to carry out this service correctly. Additionally, used engine oil is disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.
- If you choose to change the oil yourself, always follow local environmental regulations for proper disposal of used oil and filters.
Recommended grade and viscosity
CAUTION
Only use engine oil that meets the specified grade and viscosity requirements for your Subaru Ascent to ensure optimal performance and protection.
NOTE
The viscosity of engine oil plays a crucial role in fuel efficiency and engine protection. Lower-viscosity oils can improve fuel economy, while higher-viscosity oils may be more suitable in hot climates to maintain proper lubrication under increased thermal stress.
Synthetic oil
For best results, it is recommended to use high-quality synthetic engine oil in your Subaru Ascent that meets the same specifications required for conventional oil. Synthetic oil provides enhanced protection, improved performance, and better resistance to extreme temperatures.
When selecting synthetic oil, ensure it matches the classification, viscosity, and grade specified in this Owner’s Manual. Always follow the recommended oil change intervals outlined in the "Warranty and Maintenance Booklet" to maintain engine health.
NOTE
Synthetic oil with the recommended specifications is the preferred choice for achieving maximum engine performance and durability in your Subaru Ascent. However, if synthetic oil is not available, conventional oil of the appropriate grade may be used as an alternative.
Regular monitoring and правильне обслуговування engine oil in your Subaru Ascent will significantly contribute to long-term reliability, improved efficiency, and overall engine protection.
