Refueling
When refueling the Subaru Ascent, it is strongly recommended that the process be handled by a single person to maintain safety and control. Keep other individuals away from the fuel filler area while refueling is in progress.
Always follow all safety instructions and guidelines provided at the fuel station to ensure safe handling of fuel in the Subaru Ascent.
1. Before starting to refuel the Subaru Ascent, bring the vehicle to a complete stop and switch the ignition to the "LOCK"/"OFF" position to deactivate all electrical systems. At this point, the fuel filler lid will unlock automatically.
NOTE
When the Subaru Ascent doors are locked, the fuel filler lid locks simultaneously. To unlock it, perform one of the following actions:
- Press the unlock button on the key fob.
- Press the unlock side of the central door locking switch.
2. Gently press the rear edge of the fuel filler lid.
3. The fuel filler lid of the Subaru Ascent will release and open slightly.
Then, open it fully by hand for access.
WARNING
Before removing the fuel cap on the Subaru Ascent, discharge any static electricity by touching a metal surface such as the vehicle body or the fuel pump. Static discharge may cause sparks that can ignite fuel vapors and result in serious injury. Do not re-enter the vehicle during refueling, as this may generate additional static electricity.

4. Slowly turn the fuel filler cap counterclockwise to remove it from the Subaru Ascent fuel system.
WARNING
- Fuel vapors are extremely flammable.
Always ensure the Subaru Ascent ignition is off and all doors and windows are closed before refueling. Keep away from open flames, sparks, or smoking materials, and handle fuel only in well-ventilated outdoor environments. Clean any spilled fuel immediately.
- When loosening the fuel cap, turn it slowly and carefully.
Avoid removing it abruptly, as pressure inside the tank may cause fuel to spray out, especially in hot conditions.
If a hissing sound is heard, wait until it stops before fully removing the cap to prevent fuel spray and fire hazards.

5. Place the fuel filler cap securely onto the holder inside the fuel filler lid of the Subaru Ascent.
WARNING
- Insert the fuel nozzle fully into the Subaru Ascent fuel filler pipe during refueling. An improperly inserted nozzle may not trigger the automatic shutoff, leading to fuel overflow and potential fire hazards.
- Stop refueling immediately once the fuel pump automatically shuts off. Adding more fuel may cause overflow due to temperature expansion or pressure changes.
6. Do not continue fueling after the automatic shutoff occurs. Overfilling the Subaru Ascent fuel tank can cause damage or leakage.
7. Reinstall the fuel cap and turn it clockwise until a clicking sound is heard. Ensure that the tether is not caught under the cap while tightening.
CAUTION
Make sure the Subaru Ascent fuel cap is securely tightened until it clicks. This prevents fuel leakage and ensures proper sealing in case of sudden vehicle movement or accidents.
8. Close the fuel filler lid completely.
CAUTION
If fuel is spilled on the Subaru Ascent body, rinse it off immediately to avoid paint damage.
Delayed cleaning may result in permanent surface deterioration.
NOTE
- You will find the "

symbol on the fuel gauge, indicating that the Subaru Ascent fuel filler lid
is located on the right-hand side of the vehicle. - If the fuel cap is not tightened properly or the tether is trapped, the CHECK ENGINE light may illuminate. Refer to the appropriate Subaru Ascent diagnostic section if this occurs.
- To lock the fuel filler lid, perform one of the following actions. If
performed while the lid is open, it will not lock until it is closed:
- Press the lock button on the key fob.
- Use the door locking switch.
- When the Subaru Ascent automatic door locking system is activated, the fuel filler lid will lock or unlock simultaneously with the doors.
CAUTION
- Never add cleaning agents or additives directly into the Subaru Ascent fuel tank, as this may damage the fuel system.
- Always ensure the cap is fully secured after refueling. An improperly sealed cap may lead to fuel leakage or fire hazards.
- Avoid spilling fuel on painted surfaces of the Subaru Ascent. Immediately clean any spills to prevent damage not covered by warranty.
- Only use a genuine SUBARU fuel cap. Using an incorrect cap may lead to improper sealing, emission system damage, or fuel leakage.
- Refuel promptly when the low fuel warning light appears. Driving the
Subaru Ascent with extremely low fuel levels may cause engine misfires and reduced
performance.
Prolonged operation under such conditions can damage the engine.
If the fuel filler lid cannot be opened
If the Subaru Ascent fuel filler lid cannot be opened due to a malfunction or discharged battery, it can be manually released from inside the cargo area.

1. Remove the access panel on the right side of the cargo area trim using a flat-head screwdriver.

2. Detach the orange emergency release knob from the retaining clip.

3. Pull the orange knob to unlock the fuel filler lid mechanism.
4. Press the rear portion of the fuel filler lid.
5. The lid will open slightly, after which it can be fully opened manually.
