Subaru Ascent 2018-2026 Owner's Manual: Seatbelt extender

For enhanced comfort and accessibility in the Subaru Ascent, an optional seatbelt extender is available for situations where the standard front seatbelts may not be long enough to securely fasten. This genuine Subaru Ascent accessory is specifically engineered for your vehicle and should only be obtained through an authorized SUBARU dealer to ensure compatibility and safety.

Subaru Ascent seatbelt extender installed on front seatbelt for extended reach

The Subaru Ascent seatbelt extender provides approximately 8 inches (200 mm) of additional length, allowing improved reach for both the driver and front passenger seating positions.

For safety reasons, the seatbelt extender in the Subaru Ascent should be removed immediately after use, especially if the next occupant does not require it. Leaving it installed unnecessarily may affect the proper operation of safety systems.

WARNING

Always follow these important safety precautions when using a seatbelt extender in the Subaru Ascent.

Failure to comply with these warnings may reduce the effectiveness of the seatbelt system and significantly increase the risk of serious injury or death during a collision.

  • Never use a seatbelt extender in the Subaru Ascent together with a child restraint system, as it may fail to properly secure the child seat during an accident.
  • Do not use the extender if the original seatbelt is sufficiently long to fasten correctly.

If removing bulky clothing allows proper fastening, do not use the extender.

  • Never leave the extender’s tongue plate inserted into the buckle when not in use, as this may interfere with proper airbag system operation.
  • Do not connect the extender to the passenger seatbelt buckle when the seat is unoccupied, as this may affect airbag detection systems.
  • Avoid using the extender if the buckle rests across the abdomen, as this may compromise safety in an impact.
  • The Subaru Ascent seatbelt extender is intended for individual use only. Do not allow others to use it unless absolutely necessary.
  • Use the extender only with front seatbelts and only in the Subaru Ascent model for which it was designed. Never use it for rear seats or other vehicles.
  • Before fastening, ensure the extender is not twisted. Twisted webbing can increase injury severity in a crash.
  • Do not connect multiple extenders together, as this can reduce the effectiveness of the restraint system.
  • Never use a damaged extender or one that has been involved in an accident.

Subaru Ascent correct and incorrect seatbelt extender positioning

WARNING

  • When using a seatbelt extender in the Subaru Ascent front passenger seat, always confirm that the front passenger airbag ON indicator is illuminated and the OFF indicator is not active. Incorrect status may prevent proper airbag deployment.
  • The following conditions may cause the Subaru Ascent SRS airbag system to incorrectly detect seatbelt usage, leading to improper operation:
    • The extender tongue plate is inserted into the buckle without being properly connected to the seatbelt.
    • The extender remains connected when not in use.

Such conditions may also prevent the seatbelt warning system and SRS airbags from functioning correctly in the Subaru Ascent, which can result in serious injury or death. Always ensure proper connection and correct usage of the extender.

Subaru Ascent connecting seatbelt extender with aligned PRESS buttons

To properly connect the seatbelt extender in the Subaru Ascent, insert the tongue plate into the seatbelt buckle so that the "PRESS" markings on both release buttons face the same direction. A distinct click will confirm secure engagement.

When releasing the seatbelt, press the release button on the extender rather than the original seatbelt buckle. This helps prevent unnecessary wear or damage to the Subaru Ascent interior and ensures longer durability of the extender.

The Subaru Ascent seatbelt extender is a useful accessory when required, but it must always be used correctly and responsibly to maintain the highest level of occupant safety.
