Subaru Ascent 2018-2026 Owner's Manual: Alarm system

The Subaru Ascent is equipped with a comprehensive alarm system designed to protect the vehicle and its contents from unauthorized access or theft attempts.

If an intrusion is detected, the Subaru Ascent alarm system activates both audible and visual warnings, including the horn and hazard warning flashers.

For models with "keyless access with push-button start system": The Subaru Ascent alarm system can be armed or disarmed using the keyless access feature or the access key fob.

The system will not activate while the ignition is in the "ACC" or "ON" position.

For models without "keyless access with push-button start system": The Subaru Ascent alarm system can be controlled using the remote transmitter.

The system remains inactive if the key is inserted into the ignition switch.

The Subaru Ascent alarm system is factory-enabled by default. However, it can be manually deactivated or configured by the user or an authorized SUBARU dealer.

Alarm system operation

When the Subaru Ascent alarm system is armed, it will be triggered if any of the following components are opened without authorization:

• Any door
• The rear gate
• The engine hood

Once triggered, the Subaru Ascent alarm system will activate the following alerts:

• The horn will sound continuously for approximately 30 seconds.
• The hazard warning flashers will blink for approximately 30 seconds.

If the intrusion condition persists (for example, if a door remains open), the Subaru Ascent horn may continue sounding for up to 3 minutes. If the door, rear gate, or hood is closed while the alarm is active, the horn will stop after a short delay of up to 30 seconds.

NOTE

The Subaru Ascent alarm system can also be configured to activate interior lighting for additional visibility when triggered.

• Map lights (active when the switch is set to "DOOR")
• Reading lights
• Cargo area light (active when set to "DOOR")

By default, this interior lighting notification feature is disabled in the Subaru Ascent. It can be activated by a SUBARU dealer upon request.

Arming the system

The Subaru Ascent alarm system is automatically armed when a specific sequence of actions is completed, ensuring reliable protection of the vehicle and its contents against unauthorized access.

1. Fully close all windows and the moonroof (if equipped), then turn the ignition switch of your Subaru Ascent to the "OFF" position.

2. Take the Subaru Ascent key or access key fob with you and exit the vehicle.

3. Confirm that the engine hood is securely closed.

4. Lock the Subaru Ascent using any of the following available methods:

• Locking via the remote keyless entry system for quick and convenient access control.
• Using the Subaru Ascent keyless access function (if equipped) by touching the door lock sensor.
• Locking through the interior power door locking switch.
• Using the Subaru Ascent power rear gate lock button for full vehicle locking.

Security indicator light

NOTE

When the Subaru Ascent alarm system is armed, all doors and the rear gate will lock, a single electronic chirp will sound, and the hazard warning lights will flash once. The security indicator light will begin flashing rapidly to indicate that the system is entering standby mode.

5. After approximately 30 seconds, the Subaru Ascent alarm system transitions into full surveillance mode.

Once in surveillance mode, the security indicator light will flash more slowly (approximately twice every 2 seconds), confirming that the Subaru Ascent is fully protected.

NOTE

• The Subaru Ascent alarm system can technically be armed even if windows or the moonroof are open; however, for maximum security, it is strongly recommended to close all openings completely.

  This ensures proper cabin protection and prevents unauthorized entry.

• If any door or the rear gate of the Subaru Ascent is not fully closed during arming, the system will issue five warning chirps and flash the hazard lights five times.

  Once the door is properly closed, the Subaru Ascent will automatically lock and arm itself after approximately 30 seconds.

• The default 30-second standby delay can be adjusted or removed by a SUBARU dealer according to your preference.
• If any of the following actions occur during the standby period, the Subaru Ascent will not enter surveillance mode:
  • Unlocking the doors using the key fob or remote transmitter.
  • Unlocking via the keyless access system (for equipped models).
  • Opening any door or the rear gate.
  • Turning the ignition switch to the "ON" position (models without push-button start).
  • Switching the push-button ignition to the "ACC" position (models with keyless access).

Disarming the system

To deactivate the Subaru Ascent alarm system, perform one of the following procedures:

• Press any button on the Subaru Ascent access key fob or remote transmitter briefly (less than 2 seconds).
• For Subaru Ascent models equipped with keyless access, carry the access key fob and perform one of the following actions:
  • Grip the front door handle to unlock the vehicle.
  • Press the rear gate opener button.
  • Use the Subaru Ascent PIN code access feature.

After disarming, the Subaru Ascent security indicator light will change its flashing pattern to a slower interval (approximately once every 3 seconds), indicating that the system is no longer active.

Emergency disarming

For Subaru Ascent models equipped with keyless access and push-button start: If the system cannot be disarmed using the access key fob (for example, due to battery failure or damage), refer to the procedure in the "Switching power status" section.

For Subaru Ascent models without keyless access: The alarm system can be deactivated by inserting a registered key and turning the ignition switch from the "LOCK"/"OFF" position to the "ON" position.

NOTE

If the Subaru Ascent key fob or remote transmitter battery becomes weak, replace it immediately to ensure reliable operation of the alarm system and prevent unexpected issues.

Understanding how to properly arm and disarm the Subaru Ascent alarm system enhances vehicle security and ensures dependable protection in everyday situations.

Alarm system setting

The Subaru Ascent allows you to customize the alarm system by switching between activation and deactivation modes. This flexibility enables you to adapt the vehicle’s security behavior to your specific needs.

To modify the Subaru Ascent alarm system settings, follow these steps carefully:

1. First, disarm the Subaru Ascent alarm system. Refer to the section "Disarming the system" for detailed instructions.

2. Sit in the driver’s seat of your Subaru Ascent and ensure that all doors, the rear gate, and the engine hood are fully closed.

3. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.

4. Press and hold the " " button on the driver’s power door locking switch. While holding the button, open the driver’s door within 1 second, and continue holding the switch for approximately 10 seconds. The Subaru Ascent system will then switch between activation and deactivation modes accordingly.

NOTE

If preferred, this Subaru Ascent alarm system configuration can also be performed by an authorized SUBARU dealer.

If you have accidentally triggered the alarm system

To stop the alarm

If the Subaru Ascent alarm system is activated unintentionally, you can stop it by performing one of the following actions:

• Press any button on the Subaru Ascent access key fob or remote transmitter.
• Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position (for models without keyless access).
• Switch the push-button ignition to the "ACC" position (for Subaru Ascent models with keyless access).

NOTE

Only keys that are registered with the Subaru Ascent immobilizer system can deactivate the alarm. Unregistered keys will not stop the alarm system.

Valet mode

The Subaru Ascent valet mode is designed to temporarily disable the alarm system while maintaining basic remote control functions. This mode is particularly useful when handing over your vehicle to parking attendants or service personnel.

When the Subaru Ascent is in valet mode, the alarm system remains inactive. However, the remote transmitter can still be used for:

• Locking and unlocking doors
• Opening the rear gate
• Activating the panic alarm

To enable valet mode in your Subaru Ascent, switch the alarm system to deactivation mode using the procedure described above. The security indicator light will flash once every 3 seconds, confirming that valet mode is active.

To exit valet mode, simply reactivate the Subaru Ascent alarm system by switching it back to activation mode.
