The Subaru Ascent is equipped with an advanced immobilizer system designed to significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized engine start. This security feature ensures that only keys or access key fobs that have been properly registered with the Subaru Ascent immobilizer system can be used to start and operate the vehicle.
If an attempt is made to start the Subaru Ascent engine using an unregistered key or access key fob, the engine will not start. In some cases, the engine may briefly start but will automatically shut off within a few seconds. This behavior is a normal function of the immobilizer system and is intended to prevent theft.
Although the Subaru Ascent immobilizer system provides a high level of security, it should be understood that no anti-theft system can guarantee complete protection against all forms of vehicle theft.
CAUTION
- Avoid exposing your Subaru Ascent key to direct sunlight or high temperatures, as excessive heat may damage internal electronic components.
- Do not allow the Subaru Ascent key to come into contact with water. If it becomes wet, dry it immediately using a soft cloth to prevent malfunction.
- Never attempt to modify, disassemble, or remove any part of the Subaru Ascent immobilizer system. Any unauthorized changes may compromise system performance and safety.

- Never leave your Subaru Ascent unattended with the keys or access key fob inside the vehicle.

Key replacement
If you need to replace a key for your Subaru Ascent, the key number plate will be required. Always keep this number in a safe place separate from the vehicle.
Any newly issued Subaru Ascent key must be properly registered with the immobilizer system before it can be used. Without registration, the key will not function for engine starting.
The maximum number of keys that can be registered for a Subaru Ascent vehicle is as follows:
- Up to four keys for models without the keyless access with push-button start system
- Up to seven access key fobs for Subaru Ascent models equipped with keyless access and push-button start
At least one previously registered Subaru Ascent key is required when adding a new key to the system.
NOTE
If a Subaru Ascent key is lost, its identification code will remain stored in the vehicle's immobilizer memory. For security reasons, it is strongly recommended to erase the lost key’s ID from the system.
