Subaru Ascent 2018-2026 Owner's Manual: Key lock-in prevention function

The Subaru Ascent is equipped with a key lock-in prevention system designed to prevent accidental locking of the keys inside the vehicle.

Under the following conditions, the Subaru Ascent doors will not lock when the door lock switch is pressed while a front door remains open:

  • The key is still inserted in the ignition switch (models without keyless access).
  • The ignition switch is in the "ACC" or "ON" position (models with keyless access and push-button start).

NOTE

  • Always confirm that you have the Subaru Ascent key or access key fob in your possession before locking the vehicle.
  • The key lock-in prevention function is enabled by default in the Subaru Ascent, but it can be customized or disabled by an authorized SUBARU dealer.

Consult your dealer for configuration options if needed.

  • When exiting through a rear door, it is recommended to unlock all doors using the central locking switch. If a rear door is manually unlocked and then opened and closed, the Subaru Ascent system may activate the lock-in prevention feature.

In this case, all doors will unlock automatically, the warning indicator " Subaru Ascent key lock-in prevention warning light icon instrument cluster" will be displayed, and a warning chime will sound.

Non-operation of key lock-in prevention function

If the key lock-in prevention function in the Subaru Ascent is disabled, the doors can be locked under the following conditions:

  • When the lock lever is moved to the "LOCK" position while the driver’s door is open, and the door is then closed, the driver’s door will lock.
  • When a spare key is used to lock the Subaru Ascent from the outside, the door will lock regardless of key presence inside the vehicle.

Understanding the Subaru Ascent automatic locking features and key lock-in prevention system ensures enhanced safety, prevents accidental lockouts, and improves overall user convenience.
